Taking to the Track
Our K to 12 Athletics Carnival took place at Barden Park, with students competing across a range of track and field events from 9am to 3pm. It was a day built on effort, encouragement and personal best performances, and it was pleasing to see students across every year group give their best and support one another along the way. Days like these build something beyond athletic ability; they build resilience, school spirit and a genuine sense of community.
Jeans for Genes Day
Our students and staff got behind Jeans for Genes Day this month, raising funds for research into the genetic diseases, birth defects and childhood cancers that affect one in twenty children across Australia. It was a small gesture with real meaning, and I am proud of our community for taking part.
ICAS Assessments
Students have been sitting ICAS assessments throughout August, with the assessment period running through to the 24th. ICAS gives our students the opportunity to test their skills against peers from across Australia and challenge themselves academically in a meaningful way. I wish all students well with any assessments remaining, and congratulate those who have already completed theirs.
Voices from Our Community
This month we shared two video testimonials from within our own school community. Two of our Year 11 students spoke about what they have noticed since arriving at CWLA, including the encouragement to think big, a community of academically driven peers and the doors that an IB education opens to universities around the world. We also heard from our Kindergarten and Stage 1 students, who shared what it is like to learn in our classrooms every day, speaking warmly about teachers who are helpful, clear and genuinely invested in every student's progress. It was a reminder of what we are working to build across every year of schooling at CWLA. Watch here.
Orana Youth Forum
Our Year 7 to 10 students attended the Orana Youth Forum on the 20th of August, connecting with young people from across the region to explore leadership and community issues together. Opportunities like this matter. They place our students in conversation with their peers beyond our school gates and encourage them to think about the communities they are part of and the kind of leaders they want to become.
Science Fair
Our Science Fair was held on the 21st of August, with students showcasing the experiments they had been working on and sharing what they had discovered along the way. It was a genuine pleasure to see curiosity and creativity on display. I congratulate all students who presented their work and thank our staff for the effort that goes into making events like this possible.
Book Week: Symphony of Stories
Our Book Week Parade brought the whole school community together on the 28th of August, with students dressed as their favourite book characters to celebrate this year's theme, Symphony of Stories. There is something wonderful about seeing our students embrace stories and imagination together, and this year's parade was no exception.
HICES Gifted and Talented Camp
A group of our students departed at the end of the month for the HICES Gifted and Talented Camp, running from the 31st of August through to the 4th of September. This camp offers students the chance to connect with like-minded peers from across the state and extend their thinking well beyond the classroom. We look forward to hearing about their experience when they return.
A Month Well Spent
August brought a great deal to be proud of. From the athletics track to the science fair, from leadership forums to book parades, our students approached every opportunity with the effort and curiosity that continue to define this school.
