A Connected and Active May at The Academy

A Connected and Active May at The Academy

As we move through Term 2, it has been encouraging to see the continued sense of energy, engagement and connection across The Academy. May has provided a range of opportunities for students to challenge themselves, explore new interests and contribute positively to both the school and wider community.

Building Wellbeing Through Participation

A highlight of the month was our Cross Country event for students in Years 3–10. As a first for The Academy, it was pleasing to see students approach the day with enthusiasm, resilience and a willingness to challenge themselves.

Events such as these play an important role in supporting student wellbeing, encouraging perseverance and promoting a positive approach to physical activity.

Fostering a Love of Learning

The Scholastic Book Fair provided students with the opportunity to explore a wide range of texts and further develop a love of reading. Encouraging curiosity and imagination through reading remains a key focus, particularly in supporting strong foundations across all areas of learning.

School Photos also took place this month, offering a valuable opportunity to capture each stage of our students' journey at The Academy. These moments become an important record of growth, both academically and personally, over time.

Extending Thinking and Challenge

Students also participated in the Primary Schools Chess Competition, where they were able to develop strategic thinking, problem solving and concentration in a focused and supportive environment. Opportunities such as these allow students to extend their thinking while engaging positively with others.

Connecting With Our Community

The Dubbo Show provided a valuable opportunity for our school to connect with the broader community. It was wonderful to see families engage with local events and visit The Academy's presence at the show. Experiences such as these reinforce the importance of community connection and belonging, which remain central to our school values.

This month also brought a memorable experience for our students through a visit from the crew of HMAS Stalwart. Students had the opportunity to meet those who serve and hear directly about the range of careers the Navy has to offer. Of particular significance was that two of the visiting sailors grew up right here in Dubbo, with one now serving as an Officer. Their stories generated thoughtful conversations and served as a powerful reminder that meaningful pathways can take many different forms. I am grateful to the crew of HMAS Stalwart for taking the time to connect with our community.

Looking Ahead to Future Pathways

This month also provided opportunities for families to engage more deeply with the learning journey at The Academy through our High School 2027 and Kindergarten 2027 Information Evenings. It was pleasing to welcome both current and prospective families to these sessions and to share what authentic 21st century learning looks like at The Academy.

These evenings are an important part of supporting families as they consider future pathways. From the early years through to senior schooling, our focus remains on developing confident, capable learners who are supported to pursue a range of interests and aspirations.

For students moving into the secondary years and beyond, this includes opportunities to engage with broader learning pathways that encourage independence, critical thinking and a strong sense of direction as they prepare for life beyond school.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

As we look ahead, our Stage 3 students are preparing for their upcoming excursion to Canberra. This experience provides valuable opportunities to connect classroom learning with real world contexts, particularly in relation to history, government and national identity.

Experiences such as these play an important role in deepening understanding and helping students see the relevance of their learning beyond the classroom.

Looking Forward

May has reflected the strength of our school community and the wide range of opportunities available to our students. Whether through academic challenge, creative exploration or community engagement, it has been pleasing to see students approach each experience with a positive and purposeful mindset.
