Yes! The Central West Leadership Academy gains International Baccalaureate Diploma Program Authorization.

The Central West Leadership Academy has achieved Authorization to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP).

The Central West Leadership Academy is the first school in this region to offer the IB DP. We are excited to bring this new educational pathway option to Dubbo and the Central West. The Academy will commence with a year 11 cohort in 2023.

The IB DP is offered at 23 schools in NSW and the Academy will be the second school offering it in a regional area.

The Diploma Programme is an alternative qualification to the NSW HSC. It is a Year 11 and 12 programme that provides students with a qualification that is both globally recognised and translated to an ATAR for university entry within Australia. The IB DP prepares students for further study and supports their transition to higher education. The IB DP is offered in all states in AU and in the ACT; it is offered in both public and independent schools in Victoria and South Australia.

In the DP, students complete courses in: Studies in language and literature, Language acquisition, Individuals and societies, Sciences, Mathematics and The arts. They learn about the Theory of Knowledge, write an Extended Essay on a topic of their choice and participate in Creativity, Activity and Service opportunities that encourage students to be well-rounded, community minded learners.

The results from all subjects contribute equally to students’ overall grade and ATAR. Unlike the HSC students are not ranked against each other in their own cohort and do not suffer the vertical compression HSC students do when calculating ATARs. IB DP students are marked on an international standard moderated by the IBO to ensure global consistency.  The IB is a university-bound program.

Principal, Mandi Randell stated, “I have taught both the HSC and the IB in NSW; I find the IB DP to be a superior pathway for students to be best prepared for university and life.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, nearly ⅓ of all candidates who completed the IB DP in 2021 received a score of above 40 out of 45 which translates to an ATAR of more than 97.9. The average ATAR in 2021 for the IB DP was 94.55.

Principal Mandi Randell stated, “I am very proud that we are bringing this amazing educational offering to the families in our region. Without the vertical compression of the HSC, IB students are not ranked against each other and can work together to help each other succeed. It creates a supportive environment that helps students attain their personal best”.
